At the moment, the Hughes healthcare Covid tests are distributed to the governments of the United Kingdom, Spain, Austria, Germany, and France, as well as to all major UK airports, airlines, pharmaceutical firms, corporations, and distributors.

The Hughes Healthcare rapid nasal antigen test has been clinically confirmed to accurately identify symptomatic and asymptomatic patients of COVID-19 and all known forms of the disease. The test has undergone all evaluation phases at Porton Down Laboratory. Public Health England subsequently validated the test, which now bears the CE0123 designation, certifying that it is safe for use in home settings and by individuals throughout the United Kingdom and the European Union. It has been registered with the MHRA, FDA, and WHO for potential emergency usage. Patient specimens were used to assess the relative accuracy of the fast COVID-19 test offered by Hughes Healthcare, and the results demonstrate that the test has a high overall relative accuracy.

Humans have a high susceptibility to COVID-19, an acute respiratory infectious illness. COVID-19 is spreading fast worldwide, with infected patients serving as the primary transmission vectors. The majority of COVID-19 infections are asymptomatic, meaning the infected individuals do not experience any symptoms and spread the virus without realizing they are infected.
Epidemiological studies have found that the incubation period for COVID-19 is between 1 and 14 days, with most infections taking hold within the first 7 days. A dry cough that comes on suddenly or persists, a diminished sense of smell or taste, extreme tiredness, and a high body temperature or fever are the hallmarks of this illness.

CE Certification for Safe Use at Home

While other tests may attempt to incorporate a nasal swab into their procedure, they do not have the necessary clinical evidence. In contrast, our test was developed specifically for this purpose.

Although it is technically a nasopharyngeal test, Innova claims their procedure can be administered on the inside of the nose. However, the results show an accuracy of 40-50% in Birmingham and Liverpool. Healgen is another company claiming that its test can be performed through nasal swabs. Alternatively, you can buy FlowFlex COVID-19 test and see the results for yourself.

Hughes Covid Test Kits – Easy to use testing

The test’s user-friendliness makes it a breeze to administer to yourself and your loved ones in the privacy of your own home.

normal covid 19 antigen test

Normal Test Kit

The standard antigen test kit uses a swab that is inserted 9–10cm into the nasal passage.

hughes test kit use

hughes Test Kit

The nasal swab in the Hughes antigen test kit only goes in around 1–2 centimetres.

While other nasopharyngeal tests require a doctor’s assistance and swabs to be placed 9–10 cm into the nasal cavity, our tests just need to be placed 1-2 cm into the nose.

We have a patented system for increasing the sensitivity of our lateral flow test, which allows for a more accurate reading of the sample. In contrast, the colloidal gold approach is used in every other test cassette and is far less sensitive for identifying the CoV-SARS-2 antigen. Because of this, our test can be relied upon to provide reliable results regardless of the specimen type or collecting technique used. Buy our antigen tests and check!

STEP 4

A test card is splattered with three to four drops of the sample. In around 15 minutes, you’ll be able to see the outcome.

Results Interpretation

The Hughes healthcare antigen test can be completed in no more than 15 minutes, and the results are interpreted below.

NEGATIVE

A red line indicates a negative result on the Quality Control Line (C-Line) but not on the red line on the Test Line (T-Line).

POSITIVE

A positive result is indicated if both the C-Line and the T-Line exhibit a red line, even faint.

INVALID

Even if there is a red line on the T-Line, the result is VOID if there is no red line on the C-Line; in this case, the test must be repeated.

Each individual test, as well as the swab, lysis vials, and packaging, is of the highest quality and simplicity of use. Everything about the evaluation indicates that this is a top-tier, commercially available product.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Hughes Healthcare Rapid Antigen Lateral flow Tests.

Who manufacturers them? Hughes Covid Tests are manufactured by ACON Biotech

Where are the tests manufactured? These lateral flow tests are manufactured in China and Mexico.

Are they suitable for home testing? Yes from the 21st May 2021 Hughes Covid Tests were approved by the UK Government for home testing.

What is a rapid antigen test?

Hughes Healthcare rapid antigen test is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the detection of antigens specific to SARS-CoV-2 present on the inside of the nostril. The test is taken to:

trick-mark-icon Diagnose Infection

trick-mark-icon Test after infection to see if the virus has cleared

trick-mark-icon Screen asymptomatic individuals to detect whether they are carrying the virus.

How long do Hughes rapid antigen test results take?

The test is a rapid antigen test, meaning that results can be available in as little as 15 minutes.

Where are these tests made?

This range of antigen tests is developed by Acon Labs, a large global healthcare diagnostics company based in the U.S. with manufacturing facilities in the U.S., China, and Mexico. The company’s Chinese manufacturing facility has been inspected and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Are the tests officially approved?

Yes—the Hughes antigen rapid test is CE marked and registered with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This means they are safe and can be relied upon to deliver accurate results.

How accurate are the tests?

This antigen test has a sensitivity of 97.1% and a specificity of 99.5%.

Sensitivity relates to the false-negative rate and is displayed as a percentage. This means that out of 100 positive patients, the test detects 97 of them. In other words, it delivers three false negatives (i.e., where somebody is positive, but the test fails to detect the positive case).

Specificity relates to the false positive rate and is again displayed as a percentage. This means that out of 100 negative patients, the test detects this correctly 99.5% of the time. In other words, it delivers false positives only 0.5% of the time (i.e., 1 in 200 people will get a false positive).

Can the Hughes healthcare covid tests be used with different specimens?

No—the Hughes rapid antigen test is only for lower nostril rapid antigen specimens. You should only use the swab provided in the kit. Mixing testing kits has the potential to deliver incorrect results.

Can I freeze the antigen test?

No—the antigen test should never be frozen. The tests should be stored at room temperature and kept out of direct sunlight. They have a shelf life of 24 months. If you need to, the tests can be refrigerated but you should allow the test kit to return to room temperature before using it.

Can the antigen test fail?

It’s rare, but yes, the test can fail on rare occasions either by giving an inconclusive result or a false positive/negative. This tends to happen due to user error rather than a fault with the test itself, such as where the patient has not followed the instructions correctly.

Does this antigen test for new variants?

Yes, the Hughes rapid COVID-19 antigen test detects all variants including the Alpha (Kent), Beta (South African) and Delta (Indian) strains of coronavirus. The Hughes test kits also detect asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 thanks to their high sensitivity.

Is the Hughes antigen test more comfortable to use?

It is generally accepted that most patients will find the Hughes rapid antigen test much easier and more comfortable to use. This is because the Hughes test only needs to enter the lower nostril (unlike typical nasopharyngeal lateral flow COVID-19 tests which need to be pushed further up) therefore reducing discomfort without sacrificing accuracy. The Hughes test only requires a 1 – 2cm swab, unlike the standard 9 – 10cm swab you get with other tests.

Can I use the Hughes antigen test for travel?

It depends on the country. Generally, however, we would advise that no, the Hughes antigen test cannot be used to demonstrate a negative result for travel purposes as results would need to be verified by a medical professional who is registered to carry out travel testing with UKAS who can then supply you with a certificate to travel. Most countries require either (i) proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or (ii) proof of a recent negative COVID-19 PCR test for quarantine-free entry. While an increasing number of countries do accept antigen test results due to their accuracy, it’s always safer to opt for a PCR test. In any case, be sure to diligently check the travel rules for the country you are going to.

What’s the difference between antigen and antibody tests?

Antigen tests are carried out using a swab and detects active cases. In contrast, an antibody test is carried out by taking a blood sample and is used to detect previous—not current—COVID-19 infections.

Is this test kit better than the free COVID-19 test kits?

While free COVID tests are available from the UK government, the main test being given out is the Innova test. The Hughes COVID-19 antigen test is much more accurate and has a much lower chance of delivering false positives or negatives. They are also much more difficult to administer and are uncomfortable due to how far the swab must be inserted into both the throat and nostril.
